Izmir
There are lots to see besides the cats in Izmir. It's a bustling city and most tourists bypass it to head right to a coastal city or Ephesus. I agree that Ephesus is amazing to see but it is worth spending some time exploring a big city like Izmir. Above is the historic clocktower in Izmir which you can find by winding through the bazaar. You can also reach it by a tram that runs by the waterfront.
Besides the clocktower, explore the Smyrna Agora Ancient city on the southwest side of the city, and walkable if you are staying in the Konak district. Although not an extensive site it is worth visiting to get a look at some local history. Oh, and there may be a snuggly kitty and some pups keeping watch of the ruins.
Kulturpark was a main attraction for us as we stayed just south of the park. This area had a lot of hotels and seemed more like a business area. We found that we visited the areas north and west sides of the park for shops and restaurants.

In the park, there was a cultural festival happening going on for the month and an amusement park as well. Below you can see some of the fair rides, Dabke dance, and even a fun house mirror shot of Eric and me.

When you are missing home the mall at IstinyePark provided lots of comforts. They had lots of colorful shops and wonderful food options, especially on the lower level.
Ephesus
So much to see and explore in this wonderful ancient city. I can see myself spending 2 days exploring all the wonders but we were there only for a few hours.

Tips for visiting:
Take the train to Selcuk and catch a dolmus to Ephesus for cost savings. Only takes about 1 hour and a half and you can spend extended time at Ephesus.
Check the weather conditions and dress appropriately. Wear light-colored clothing, and bring a long shirt or sun umbrella to protect yourself from the sun.
Bring water and snacks. you will be there for a while.
Pay additional to visit the Terrace houses. They are covered from the sun and have some pretty amazing mosaics. Since additional cost less crowded than other areas.
Remember to visit the outer areas like the church of the virgin mary and the Temple of Artemis. Also less crowded.
